Been busy, painted set of 16" wheels to use with my 235/85 tires, replaced shocks, replaced rear output shaft seal, which lead to my handbrake rebuild, which lead to replacing the rear driveshaft. Which lead to draining every fluid and filling her back up. Now to mount the tires and figure out why she now is stalling and backfiring!!!! Where to begin the diagnosis!!!????

Drawn my rear winch removable attachment that will be used on my rear tow hitch. Its for an Superwinch Lp8500. Parts should be plasma cut and bent today and I should be able to assemble/weld them tonight at home.

Today, I :
1. Cleaned the flywheel and replaced the center bushing.
2. Stripped the clutch.

The old and new bushing:

I wire wheeled and washed all the parts and shot the cover with primer:

The lever in the normal position but easier to see without the cover:

The cover is painted and all the pieces laid out.

The guts going together. A dab of high-temp grease on the pivot points and the adjusting not locations:

I have not set the adjuster height yet. I will do that tonight. I need to check the book for it.

thought i'd check my lights before I get the 74 inspected. Due March 31st, little late. Well front right driving light and left reverse lights are out. Reverse light was easy, cleaned connections, good. Front right was more of a PITA, after tracing down the problem to the ground lead on the light I found the ground connector at light was disconnected. Reconnected it with a little solder good to go.
Put the bulkhead cowl, tunnel cover and floors in the 109. Preping for a test drive of the brake upgrade and clutch slave and reservoir work.

I was no where as productive as you guys. I took my 109 to the local park and slept in the back of it to avoid the 2 day old baby who kept crying. I was a slacker!

Procure this item, throw it in the back of the 109 and use it when you get to the park.

http://www.rei.com/product/798588/byer-amazonas-paradiso-double-hammock

That is what I've been doing for the last month. Hammock in the back of the 109, do toward the back, where normal people won't take their cars and chill. Been having house-buying issues and this thing has done a lot to lower my stress level.

got the trans and transfer case up into the RRCLWB. Bolted up the oil pan (removed to make easy access to the torque converter bolts) and the oil pipes for the trans. Still some hook ups yet to do; prop shafts, LH exhaust mani, y pipe, exhaust, cross member, reassemble center console...

I tried to get a shop to do this and nobody in my area wanted to touch it. It cost me several weekends to do this swap between taking the trans out of the donor, out of the driver, and getting it all sorted and back in.

I ended up using my engine crane and dropped a chain down thru the trans hump hole. Somehow I got the right balance point on the trans/transfer case assembly cz it slid right up into place with a small amount of wiggling.

My driveway is THE WORST place to work on cars but it always seems that's where I end up doing all my major repairs. Gnarly gravelly asphalt. If only I lived at the barn where I can work inside with my air tools on a concrete floor...

Glad you like that. Originally I used the 109 since getting to the back of the park was a little...muddy. Not that a sedan can't do it, but why muddy up the DD when I got mud tires on the truck?

Speaking of the 109, today its transmission comes BACK out :(. Reverse wasn't working too good and replacing the detent springs didn't help much.

In the meantime, I've been making progress on procuring the new fort that the 109 will live at. Don't think I'll get all the electrical done before we move in but at least will get the garage floor painted.

Removed a disfunctional temperature gauge and odometer/speedometer and sent them off to Vancouver to be fixed. Removed my rear differential to get the broken axle out. While I had it out I swapped all the lock washers out for grade 8 and locktited them all.

Today, I made a small jig to bend some steel:

Some 1/2" round bar and a bit of angle iron:
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050130.jpg

I marked out and bent some strips I had previously cut:
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050134.jpg

It took a bit of practice but I got it worked out:
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050133.jpg

I still need to tack and weld up this crossmember but every bit helps:

The case and the internals and new bearings. This one got delayed because I needed to get shims.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050159.jpg

Fitted the iner bearing on the pinion shaft:
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050163.jpg

Putting on shims for the outer pinion bearing:
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050165.jpg

And the bearing itself:
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050166.jpg

Sitting the carrier/ring gear in position:
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050169.jpg

Putting on the caps:
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050170.jpg

First check of the pattern.

It is not terrible but the ring gear backlash is a little tight right now at 0.005"
I will open it up to 0.008"-0.010" and see how it looks after that. The pattern should move a bit toward the heel of the teeth. The gears are old though so the pattern is not going to be perfect. I do not mind doing it a few times if I need to. It got to be dinner time so I will finish it tomorrow hopefully.

I found some inspiration on this forum several months ago that got me thinking about a swing away rear tire carrier for my rover. I am not sure who posted the custom built carrier or where, but it stuck in my head until I had to build one. I spent every night for the last 7 days cutting, grinding and welding, and the finished product is very functional. To whomever built the original, thank you for the innovative design.

Over the course of the past two weekends Beulah has been the proud recipient of a SIII gearbox, transfer case, and bell housing. Buttoned it all up on Friday night and took her for a spin down the street and she ran like a Rover (loud and proud)! The Fairey sounded good as well. Changed all the fluids and awaiting the alternator brackets. Now to attend to some cosmetic issues before the 7 hour drive to Florida.

Thanks again to all of you in the forum that supported the effort with your insight and recommendations. This was a significant part of the success of the effort.

It is GM Part number: 1052351
1oz tube of gear marking compound.
Your local friendly Chevy/GM parts dept will probably have a tube. It cost me $11.xx (less than $12) I could probably do 5 or 6 diffs with the tube.
It stays nice and wet and is easy to see.

I wrapped up the diff from yesterday. I ended up with 0.005" more for pinion shims to get it where I wanted it.
I got my rockers back today. $6 each to hard chrome and polish them. I am happy I reconditioned them myself. I fitted new bushings reamed to size too.

Well seeing that I am getting on the road
At 600am for work and get out at 700pm
I decided to put a day night mirror.
Just an old jeep mirror I got
Made the securing screw hole bigger
And mounted it throught one of the windscreen
Mounting holes.
No more having to push away the old mirror
So I don't get blinded from headlights.
Not really not that big of a deal.
Just a little something.

I cut off my dumb irons today. It felt a little monumental, like a pivotal moment or something silly like that. I guess it is time to make some new ones now. Even though I cut new ones, I will recover and reuse the spring hangers from these old dumb irons. The heritage of them and all that....
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050300.jpg

The steel looks in good condition at the cut except for the bottom face. I am replacing that for the first 2 feet or so anyway.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050303.jpg

I made some pieces to act as a jig in place. They locate (centered) on the rear hole for the chassis bushing with another hole for the front of the spring hanger.
The jig will give me the following locations.
1. Define the forwardmost point of the dumb iron
2. Establish the height of the top of the dumb iron.
3. Establish positively the location of the cross holes for the spring hanger as it mounts to the dumb iron.
4. The width of the outside faces of the spring hanger at the cross holes.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050294.jpg

I will let it sit mocked up like this overnight while I plan the next move: I still have to mark it all up for the welded joint. I will do an angled joint, not a vertical one.

http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050286.jpg

Well, I got a little more done today. The deer flies almost ate me for lunch though so it was no fun. First, I decided to do a little investigation. The bumpstops for the back axle were a little swelled and I suspected rust packed between them and the chassis. So I cut them off.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050386.jpg

One even had a hole.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050387.jpg

I cut away the old steel so that there will not be a rust sandwich in future and made two new ones. I will weld these all the way around and that should be the last of that in my lifetime.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050391.jpg

Then I got back to the dumb irons. I got them mocked up with the jig and the joints figured out and marked.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050370.jpg

I trimmed the noses and made the critical cuts.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050379.jpg

It is hanging from the cross holes at the textbook location. It fits pretty good.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050383.jpg

And from the outside.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050381.jpg

I got both the left and right sides done this far along.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050393.jpg

Tomorrow, I need to make backing plates for plug welds. I also need to but the braces in the nose of the dumb irons and drill the bumper mount holes. Then I can weld up the dumb irons and tack them in position and hopefully welded up.

Work has kept me busy but I got a little done today. I welded up the dumb irons themselves. Then I made two strips to set the width of the legs when I finally attach them. I will have one above and below and bolt them through the bumper mount holes.

Then I figured out what I want to do for backing plates and got some of the work done.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050407.jpg

I cut a backing piece and got it welded in.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050423.jpg

I cut some strips for the sides and drilled the holes in the chassis to plug it in too.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050424.jpg

Then it got dark and I am about out of gas for the welder. This thing is taking way too long.

Well not today but several weeks ago...Replaced broken axel in my lla 88. Got help from a mechanic friend with a lift. Lift made it much more pleasant. Not being experienced, I guess I also wanted someone nearby who could help. He let me do all the work. Had to take down the Differential as a chunk of axel was lodged in it. Knocked that thru with a long punch. Not nearly as complicated as I thought it would be. Everything went back together fine. Now I have to figure out what to do about my transmission leak. Don't know exactly where it originates but it is keeping the crossmember from rusting.

Installed the OE drop plate, new shock absorbers and axle limit straps..upside is the PO had POR 15'd the chassis, downside is it included the bolts, nuts and exposed threads on the chassis bolts. Adds some time and effort to the job.

The weather was just horrid here lately. Big storms and inches of rain. It has let up it seems though.
I got a bit more done. I got the rest of the outriggers formed up. Sometimes I have pressbrake access and sometimes not. A friend of mine did these in his shop after I gave him the drawings. I cannot complain. I have not had to give any money but he assures me I will pay dearly for them..... the usual arrangement. The tabs on the leftmost part are stops I put in for the pressbrake. When I got them for free, I do not want the job to be harder than it needs to be.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050474.jpg

I finished the gearbox crossmember.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050445.jpg

And the spot welds, well plug welds.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050449.jpg

There was a small bit missing from one of the brackets that supports the radiator panel. so I put in a patch.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050466.jpg

Here you can see the final fit-up arrangement for the chassis leg joint. I cannot imagine doing this without backing plates and plug welds. As you can see here, I have backing material with plug welds on 3 of the 4 sides of the joint. The bottom is new material for the first 30 inches back and also has a backing plate where it ends.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050433.jpg

Well, I am committed now. There is no going back. (Yes, I went back and fixed the plug weld where I missed a bit.)
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050458.jpg

Setting up for the spring hangers.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050462.jpg

Here you can see the final position of the jig. It worked great.
http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t365/kevinpkeane/1951LandRover/P1050463.jpg

When I measured it all as I took off the jig. The legs pulled together about 1/32" (0.75 mm) They pulled downward about the same. The pulling was even and the same on both sides. I am not even going to bother jacking the legs apart. I am very happy so far.
I still need to get some of the outriggers sorted. Tomorrow beckons.

Hey WCKev, once again -great work... I assume you're going to get the frame galvanized when you're done? What gauge/thickness steel are you using? Did you try to match the original or just used what was common near you?

keep it up!
~Steve

westcoastkevin
05-03-2012, 09:41 AM
Thanks Steve. I used 10/12/14 gauge as needed. Pretty much the original thickness. Bear in mind that the original metal may have thinned a bit from 61 years. It still cost me a few hundred $$$ in welding wire, gas, grinding discs and flap wheels etc. I wish I was doing it in a proper shop, it would have only taken a few days.

Yes, I intend to galvanize it when done. I need to study up and plan it a bit. I need to drill some vent/drain goles for the zinc. I might make some bolt-on lifting eyes for the galv guys to hang it from too. This way, I might get better results rather than letting them tie a chain around it.

My immediate problem is that my project goes into a 2 month hiatus on Tuesday. I would just LOVE to get the chassis buttoned up before then.

hey jason,

ill try and get some pics, i mounted it on the inner main frame just forward of the fuel tank. in fact i took out floor board and did that way. i had to rebend the supplied bracket that came with it so it would screw into the top of frame. i had no room to get a drill in to mount on side of frame. took about an hour to run electric, fuel line and mount pump.

the whole assembly has about .35" clearance from the floor pan when the floor was put back in. the supplied bracket for the pump is a 90DEG bracket that i had to straighten out. the pic is from the underside facing out to the side to land rover.

never had a napa inline, but there is a slight buzz when you hit the ignition w/o firing motor. the pump motor has rubber bushings on the mount area where its attached to the supplied bracket. i cant hear it running after i fire up the motor. then again i cant hear anything when iam riding in the 109 with buckshot mud tires. lol

I purchased the isolator kit that is supposed to cut down on noise and vibration - two rubber buffers attach the mounting bracket to a separate bracket that I attached to the front fuel tank outrigger. While servicing and cleaning the speedometer, I upgraded the lighting for the unit.
1st I got 4 12v ultrabright LED's:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh113/bioheat/102_1733.jpg

Then I started gluing them to the back of the dial, since they're mono-directional, I faced them outwards to the reflecting ring on the edge of the dial like this:

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh113/bioheat/102_1734.jpg

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh113/bioheat/102_1735.jpg

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh113/bioheat/102_1736.jpg

I used 60 second epoxy to hold the LED's in place. The result is a very nice bright readable dial at least 3 times as bright as the original lighting:

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh113/bioheat/102_1739.jpg

Unfortunately this photo doesn't really do it justice. All I need to do now is upgrade the other dial with the fuel gauge and alternator gauge.

Worked on the bugeye, well this really two weekends ago and today. I reconditioned both axle cases, installed a tru trac in rear w/ bearing kit, fooled with the pinion shims to get that right, on off on off on...... installed new springs, set axles on springs and attached front spring plates kind of. Put the wrong plates on the front, realized it after the fact, so today I removed them and installed the correct ones. Love doing things twice. glad I didn't get to the back ones yet or I'd be changing both.

This is on my list of summer projects. Can you tell me a bit more about the pinion shims? Did you have to buy a variety of sizes, or is there a stack already hanging out in the diff?

I bought my TT from GBR as a kit with bearings and shims. I did it by trial and error, started w/ original set, installed them, tighten pinion nut and had some end play, Reduced the stack height and repeated the process until I had a little preload on the bearings.
If you get it from GBR Bill is very helpful on explaining the process.
There is a stack in the differential but mine had to much end play when reinstalled. Didn't make sense to me that they would not have been correct. Bearing are made to very exact dimensions.

Drove out to RN and picked up some consumables today. Got home and did a oil change. Managed to NOT seal the oil filter canister correctly and burped out a quart or two of oil onto the driveway when I started the truck up. I hate that canister! Stupid me removed the tarp from underneath the rover before I started her up. I am just going to carry a bucket of kitty litter with me all the time. ;);) Can't wait to hear from RM about the new spin-on filter adapter.

yesterday I took my 88 for a trail ride with its new BFG's and they performed flawlessly. Water up to the doors and slick boulders were no challenge and not once did they spin, just crawled up and over and through every obstacle. Later on I took a normal car out to RI to help Omar with the brakes on his 88, ground down the new pads significantly and snapped a bleeder screw, ending progress for the night.

Today I took my 109 out to East greenwich from mystic (about an hour drive) back to Omar's with a spare wheel cylinder and other misc parts to see if we could get his truck rolling. After many hours of wrenching and rigging, his truck (affectionately referred to as the "blue waffle" by the end of the night) sat on all fours and went for a test drive. There was still air in the system, but thats not a big deal... the real problem is that even after grinding down the new shoes a lot, they still rub and the brakes are perpetually applied if you will, after the test drive the wheels were hot to the touch. We're at a loss and don't know whats going on, the problem definitely seems to be the shoes, so its going off to a reputable british car shop in the area to get sorted and it should be back on the road soon enough. My friend and I hit the road home in the 109 a little after midnight with a nice heavy mist/light rain and no wipers, (they work, just no blade on the drivers side), and made it home around 1. Even with the poor visibility, the 109 clipped right along with its roverdrive and got us home unscathed and in a timely fashion, every drive truly is an adventure.

Also I traded my friend the old brush guard from my 109 for an old warn winch (either a 8k or a 9k), its in pieces, but I'm looking forward to getting that sorted through and in working order so I can put it on my 88 in the near future.

I made a sacrificial offering to the 109 of new parts and a box of used parts that arrived this week. I quickly ran away, fearing I had to put them all in that day......

Wire wheeled and wire brushed the chassis yesterday and today on the 88". Then treated any rust that was still evident and rattle canned it all....what a bloddy mess! Good thing was what was left was an awesome looking SOLID frame I am very happy with. There is some cancer in the front right horn, I have a new one to put on one day. But basically the rover gods were smiling at me when I found this one....she is a beauty. I am very happy with the way it looks now.

My issues how much more I should do...I could leave it as is...you know... A "unmolested all original" or repaint the panels. After taking care of the breakfast panel and reprinting that I am tempted to repaint the whole thing......decisions decisions....but it is now my daily driver so I don't want to do too much. S

She is quite happy looking now though!

Fixed my RHD 109's driver door latch. The galvanized junction box cover worked as a nice brace.

Added a new idle mixture screw and spring to my weber 34ICH. The truck ran great at 2.5 turns out. Unfortunately the 30 year old spring allowed the screw to gradually back out to 6 turns out!

And I fixed our leaky bathroom tub in which the drain pipe fell off.

Started to wirewheel my 88" chassis down to bare metal so I can use the 3 step POR15 frame paint. Most of the LR chassis is covered in surface rust and the original paint has been taking too long to wirewheel off. Decided to break out the paint stripper as it's making paint removal easier. At this speed I should have the chassis painted faster than expected.

Assembled my new swivel balls today on the bugeye. For the first one I did it by trial and error. PITA. For the second one I installed the swivel ball into the housing with the lower control arm assembled, lower bearing, railcos, and upper pin in place without any shims, Snugged the upper assembly evenly until I had about the correct drag. I then feeler guaged the gap. Assembled the shims to this value, reassembled and checked drag, little tight. Removed .005" shim and was right on. With new bushes, bearings and top pins I had .080" and .095" of shims

I read n old post where someone split his shims on top and bottom to centralise the assembly. This will actually offset the ball. The bottom control arm and bearing do this without shims. The top shims just build up above the housing and control drag. They do not effect the orientation of the ball.

I caved and brought it to a local mechanic that deals with vintage cars, was able to adjust everything as well as sand the drums them selves to get them to stop binding. Found some rust that I did not expect during my most recent steering/suspension rebuild, and thought I would share some pics.

The footwell was painted by the PO, and while the interior panel was replaced with a galvanized panel, the wheel well was hiding some nasty cancer. I cut it out, cut a few plates to fit, and welded them in. After 2 coats of paint and a spray on rubberizing compound, she should be good to go.

http://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k400/rwsherony/Rover/20120513_121139-1.jpg

http://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k400/rwsherony/Rover/20120514_163009-1.jpg

I pulled the rear axle out as part of the rebuild, and there looked to be a few spots on the support that had rusted through. Upon further inspection with a welder's hammer, the damage was beyond repair. I cut the old support off and made some new pieces. Seems like the right time to run out of CO2/Argon, right? Had to finish this project with flux-core, which is my first time welding with the stuff. turned out gross, but functional.

http://i325.photobucket.com/albums/k400/rwsherony/Rover/20120619_1025291.jpg

Finally was the rear door. The box and support that hold the door latch were in pretty bad shape. A few pieces of the door frame were toast as well. I cut out all the rust I could, drilled out the rivets and welds that secured the door latch box, and replaced it all with home-made steel parts. when all was repaired, I installed my new anti-burst latches, and made door cards (for all three doors) out of 1/4" plywood. After painting the wood and wrapping with marine grade vinyl, I am pleased with the results.

Oh the joys of having my brother in law back in town....

With his help over the past two weekends, I resealed the primary tank with POR-15. Reinstalled it this weekend. Whatever pinhole leak existed is sealed.

New stainless allen head bolts hold the filler tube assembly so I never have to deal with the nightmare of removing that piece again. Skinned knuckles and a very annoyed brother-in-law....

And then a family ride in the rig. My daughter was dancing around all day Sunday since she knew her Rover was going to be running again. She kept running to tell Mom that she was going to get to go for a ride in the truck.

Got to look at a spare tank I have to put that in after checking for leaks of course, maybe doing a POR 15 tank seal or something like that. Then I need to replace the exhaust intermediate pipe and possibly do some work on the back of the axle housing.

Will also have to replace the brake MC - then I should be 100% good to go . . . just in time for me to head back down to FL. DOH!

How'd you end up doing it? Just a simple easy-out or something more complex?

easy outs and lefty drills, etc wouldnt work because there just isnt clearance up there on the front of the xfer case. In the end it was just basic ****, but 2 weeks worth.

I ground a slot into the end of the bolt so I could use a small flat head screwdriver and wrench on the shaft to get some torque into the bolt. From there it was oil/heat for a few days. and nothing. then I decided to drill a small hole in from the top so I could get more oil into the threads. ended up drilling two, just barely to the threads. more oil/heat, nothing. I ordered 1oz of nitric acid from ebay and began using that to eat away at the bolt from those top two holes. seemed to work, but was sloooow. I spilled half of it on my garage floor, and it splashed on my shins. lucky i have a hose right outside ready to go. I now have scabs reminding me of that careless moment... Anyway, I used a small diamond point to grind away more from the end of the bolt in hopes of getting rid of some corrosion too. ground the slot deeper, and ground the screwdriver so it would get a better grip in the slot. After the acid was used up I began going at it again with heat/oil. heat oil heat oil, turning on the tiny screwdriver with an adj wrench.. finally - POP! it goes, and I can see the threads revolving - It was free!!!!!!

The whole thing is back together now, swimming in anti-seize.

Last night I put my middle doors back (109 SW) on . . . and they fit. This is amazing to me because I had discarded the old doors in the garbage dump two years ago with plans on getting new ones (all the old iron was rusted out). I was on back order for over a year for Proline. I searched the country for decent used doors. When I kept running into dead ends, I had to go back to the dump. Pull the old doors out, peel the aluminum off and reconstruct them almost from scratch. So, you can't hardly tell now. But with the man hours I put in, I can't imagine what those doors cost me.

Wow well that's about right. Middle doors have become unobtainable-ium. You can always rebuild the ones you have so long as the latch area and the curved bits aren't rusted away. I got the absolute last of the available OE skins from Ike, and some some tatty frames from some guy in Luray VA that had been in a fire. With all that and my original frames I have put together some that have just gone off to the galvanizer's. These are the really hard to find 2A ones that have the drain holes. I pity anyone who is in the USA and looking for middle doors from now on.
You can't get the repair channel that exactly matches the original, so it's often necessary to cut up a perfectly good S3 front door frame to get the right stuff.
I have heard that there are repro ones being made in the UK that are a very very close match. Not the ProLine hack stuff.

Hmmm. Need more chain I think.

With the lift points on the head being front and rear, the head would be parallel to the bucket with a single chain. Needed that second chain to re-position it to be inline with the tractor.

Well, I beat off Prince Lucas for another few years. Rewired my front headlights after experiencing some flickering while going over bumps while driving. I finally went over a bump, and they gave up the ghost. Thank goodness for the clear marker lights! New connectors, and everything is working as it should again. I also wired up a new aux. fuse panel, and wired in a rear work light, a cigar lighter, and swapped out a busted U-joint on the front prop shaft that was keeping me from driving with the front hubs locked in. Topped up the transmission and transfer case with 90wt, all in 93 degree weather.

Got most of the body panels to the painter's. Assembled the LT230, R380 and 200 Tdi into a single unit, ready to plop in the chassis. Did final demolition/disassembly of the bulkhead. Pretty bad. saving the door posts and upper dash, but the footwells are all out.
Next up; building the 24 spline front axle and doing the disc brake conversion on the Salisbury. Need to get some feet under it.

I drove it! First time in 2 1/2 years. Just around our property as I let the insurance and tags expire. Felt good. Forgot how hard it was to steer (109 SW) to turn around and how hard it takes to press the brakes to stop (have only having power steering and breaks in my other cars). But man was I happy to see it out of the shed again after a major restoration.

Agreed! That's why it stayed in place. The fender was already off for the clutch/brake/steering box work. The pump passed a pressure test initially, but after sitting for 25 years, and a vinegar flush upon fire up, it gave up it's last legs and started to squirt.

Creative camera angling kept the radiator from view.:thumb-up:

I should be more specific, extra shallow. I have shallow and deep, but that nut on the mount is a bear. Sockets go on with a wiggle but drive can't get in there.

Only ones I can find are Snap-Ons and they are pricey.

Spent a few hours on the creeper draining engine, diff, tranny and transfer oil. And then, yes, filling them all back up again. Wondered why the hell the drain plugs and filler plugs are all different sizes.

Good fun watching my 1 year old play with wrenches on the driveway next to me. My daughter fixing my bike. Both of them riding on the creeper together. And my wife wondering what the hell she got into having a family with this greasy old guy.

Adjusted the parking brake too. I think that may be the first time I locked onto a drum brake adjuster on my Rover and had it work properly. I did a little dance....

Not today but yesterday evening I met the truck that brought the new (old) 1957 Series 1. Given it was a large carrier it couldn't get to the house so I met it off the freeway a couple of miles away. Given that it was late it was after dark. Given that I am working my way in Roverland from newer to older I had no clue how to crank a Series 1. Given that the previous owner loaded the truck with an empty tank when I finally had groped around in the dark and figured how to crank it it wouldn't fire and run. At that moment parked on the wrong side of the road with a seemingly doa 55 year old truck I realized what a stupid idea buying a third actually was.

When my son showed up with 5 gallons of gas and the truck fired and ran like a watch and I had driven it home I realized what a great idea it was to get a third. And I realized how badly I need to replace the rock hard 35 year old bias ply tires on the Series 3 as the newest oldest had a cushy ride by comparison. (lazy and stupid I know but so far I haven't been driving it much. I need to dismount the tires and have the wheels blasted and powder coated before remounting new tires)

So now it sits in the driveway next to the D-90 and the S3 in better shape that I could have hoped for. I am really looking forward to going through the truck this weekend and sorting it out and of course starting to spend time and money.

SWMBO is taken from the novel by H. Rider Haggard titled "She". Its a sorta sci fi fantasy story. I read it about twenty years ago so I don't remember the details of it, but I did enjoy the read. A real ripping yarn, up there with Hornblower, Jack Aubrey, Sharpe and Jason Bourne. The She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed thing was made popular in the "Rumpole of the Bailey" TV series aired on PBS back in the 90s. Rumpole used the term when referring to his wife.

Hopefully within the next 2 weeks, all of the painting will be done, and the whole thing put back together. Oh, BTW does anyone have an extra rubber boot for the hand brake kicking around? Got everything back from galvanizing, cleaned up all the slubs and clumps and thorns on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon placed the 200 tdi/gearbox/transfer case with the X brake bracket inside the frame rails. Futzing with that took most of the remaining day but did end up with the thing in a happy place. Test fit the bulkhead, seatbox, and all OK. Measured for engine mounts, but got too dark and had to bail. The skeeters were pretty bad too.
Sunday finished alignment of engine in the frame. Measured up for the brackets. Had no steel so I ended up taking the upright 3x4 box tube off my old trailer and lopped off some brackets with the chop saw. Used drill press to make a series of holes which then became the slots in the brackets.
Took engine back out and got chassis ready to weld in the brackets. Used the tractor loader to flip the chassis on its side so that I could weld flat instead of vert. Loved it. Flipped to do the other side and the motor mounts are in. Welds not too snotty.
Got some 545 Awlgrip primer on the bare areas and called it a day.
