Side Step Options?

Hi All,

As our Series III is getting closer to being back on the road we're starting to consider some of the other features/items that we consider necessary to get either before it goes on the road or soon afterward. One of those items are side steps - not for me, but for my girlfriend who is quite short. We like the idea and looks of the original flip side steps, but our side ones are missing (besides the brackets) and the rear one is rusted beyond repair. The reason the flip steps appeals to us is because it will be out of the way for me (so I'm not cracking my shins on them) yet it will make getting in and out of the Rover easier for her. Replacement steps seem to cost a fortune though! There do seem to be cheaper options for Defender steps, but has anyone put a set on a Series? If so, do you have any pictures? Another option we've thought of would be a grab-bar but so far haven't been able to come up with any reasonable places to attach one. Any ideas?

Just buy a cheap rubbermaid plastic stool. You can move it from the back or to either side as needed, and you won't crack your shin on it. Plus, it will only cost around $5.00

Milhouse: I have the OE steps all around. My wife insisted on having a step so she could get into our beast. I added one on my side for symmetry; my truck had one on the back when I got it 21 years ago.

The step shown above will look original and is easy to install. They probably come with instructions. If not, PM me and I'll scan the ones I have and email them to you.

That is my plan. Have something like that and have it tied off inside the truck. Once the female unit gets in, she can pull the stool up and stow it.

I think the factory style steps should come pre bent. That will save the owner the hassle of hitting them on something since they all end up that way anyhow.

I agree on the plastic stool idea. It's portable so you can stand on it while you're hunched over your 2.25L on the side of I-95. Can't do that with a factory step.

Wow, you take yors on I-95! Brave man. I barely like to drive mine on I-290 in Worcester.

The only issue I've had is they don't fit with ricksliders and the step stool is a real pain on the trail.

Believe me, I-290 can be far worse than I-95 at times.....

I use a two foot tall alum. step ladder. Also helpful for loading kayaks onto the Brownchurch rack

I thought the milk crate with a length of rope tied to it was a cool idea. Or maybe install a carriage step next to your driveway?

Seriously tough there are also folding metal steps used on trucks and busses, they work well on the rear crossmember and could be used on rock sliders too. as long as some fool doesn't mistake them for a recovery point.

TSR53, are there installation instructions for the set of steps you posted? I just received one, don't have any on my Rover, so don't have a reference point. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I threw 4 of those side steps in the trash back in 2004. My 109 hasn't scraped, crunched or hung up on huge rocks since.

In hindsight, I wish I would have sold them to someone...
