What to look for when buying a Series LR

Hello there fellow enthusiasts. A friend of mine knows where I can get a series II for a bargain.

I owned a Disco II and worked through all the idiosyncrasies with it...air bag, there amigos, etc. I have restored Triumph TR7, Porsche 944, and owned 325i convertible, many motorcycles and other cars. Currently driving an X5 and R1150GS.

I am a hobbyist with vehicles and don't mind new things.

Any way, back to the vehicle, I did a quick search on this site and came up with nothing. What are some things I need to be concerned with when looking a the Series LR? I am not too familiar with this vehicle, there are a few around in fields but not many being driven.

I have very little info on the vehicle, nor have I even seen it yet. I am assuming it is a type II, could be IIa...again unsure.

I will look at the chassis, from what I researched, the rear where the spring hangers mount causes some concerns.

What else...and/or a link to this information.

    Thanking you all in advance.

This site is a pretty good resource:

Land Rover frequently asked questions. Information on history, parts, clubs, maintenance and vehicle specifications

    Specifically this section:

    '67 109 NADA #413 - rebuilding w/ TDI & galvy chassis.

The top thing is RUST, in bulkhead (firewall) and the frame itself (out riggers, spring perches, rear cross member, etc.). Everything else needing checking is pretty typical; engine, trans and transfer case, electrics, so on.

What year? Style? The chassis is a good place to start...rear cross-member, outriggers and front spring mounts. Take a GOOD look at the bulkhead/firewall (inside and out) and door posts. If possible check the condition of the swival balls for pitting. Is the truck running?

I have not seen the rig yet. It is located 2 hours from my house and may take a trip on motorcycle to look at it.

From the little I know, it hasn't been running in probably 20 or more years, just sitting in a field.

while rust is a consideration, it is something you can deal with. What will be hard is finding missing parts or replacing panels that are damaged. Series 2 and 2A items, at least originals, are very very hard to come by. Did I mention it's hard to find parts? Well it is.
There are reproduction parts available but the quality is usually much lower than the originals.
The sitting part doesn't bode well. As you know inactivity is ****** on cars and being out in the elements doubly so. You'll probably have to replace every seal gasket and rubber part. That can get expensive.

I think this is beyond repair!

Actually, I am not even sure it's a Land Rover.

I still have not seen it, these were taken by my friend. I can get it for free.

                    Can someone identify this beast....please

It looks like a Series LR, but the grill is throwing me off...also, the top of the headlights keep shape on the bonnet. I am stumped.

Found out what it used to be.....Austin Gipsy Series 4

Very cool. Probably hard to find parts for...might make a good parts truck. Although it may be rare enough to make worth saving.
