    MC rebuild

I have been debating if I should rebuild my master cylinder or just buy a new one. I want to learn as much as possible, but I can’t figure out how to get this thing apart. I do not see a snap ring in the back. Does anyone have any suggestions or a step by step on how to take it apart? Thank you in advance for your help.

I think if you look closely at the bore in this photo, you'll see that instead of a snap ring, they use a spiral ring. The end of the ring is angled so you can pry it out of the groove with a small flat screwdriver. Once you get it started out of the groove, you can work the helix out of the groove till it's completely free, which will allow you to remove the guts.

I am still trying, but I don't see the angle you were talking about.

Looks like the retaining clip is actually not there.

You can get the plunger, etc out of the cylinder by taking an electric tire pump (or air compressor) and pressing it up against one of the two brake pipe holes/fittings - press hard so the air is forced into the cylinder. Block the other one with your thumb. That will be just enough pressure to get the cylinder to "spit out" the plunger and internals.

Oh, wait--DUAL master cylinder; There's probably not going to be a retaining ring, but the tipping valve needs to come out first. Just follow the book procedure:

I am making progress, but I am stuck again… In the directions for a Dual type MC step 14 says to lift the reservoir but I can’t get it off the MC. Looking at the attached diagram item 5 says there is an internal circlip. How do I remove the reservoir? I am afraid to pull to hard because I don’t want to crack it and I don’t want to try to pry it with a flat head because I don’t want to puncture it…
But your directions say to simply pivot it. Maybe that is the case, but it wouldn’t solve the problem to access number 6 in my diagram.
Thank you all so much for your help!!

I'm thinking that internal circlip makes the reservoir one of those 'once its installed it ain't coming apart' deals. That's why the service manual tells you NOT to attempt to remove the reservoir.

I tend to think the same thing.

Thank you all for your support! Safe Air one what manual do you have? I may need to pick one up as an additional reference since the Haynes didn't spell it out as nice as yours did. I also liked how they added the special note.

It's the factory SIII Workshop Manual.

I was able to pick up a rebuild kit. Does any one have any pointers on how to disassemble #11-#18? I need to change those seals, but cant get it apart. What fluid do you all recommend? Thank you again.

You definitely need a factory Workshop Manual...

Here's the rest of the page (from the factory WSM) that I posted in response to your earlier query:
