After reading all of this it sounds like you poped the disk in the clutch thats when the plate materiel pops off the disk I have seen it before. It will work one minite then the next no clutch just like that. that is my guess with out having it here in my shop.

do you have an overdrive? the input spline could be stripped.
there is enough freeplay in the drivetrain for 4wd to engage without moving the vehicle. the engagement dogs on the gears are only about 1/8 to 1/4" in width.
Originally posted by xroverfree wheel hubs are locked. I can usually feel/rear the shift into 4WD and I didnt. I was of the opinion that a short rotation of the tires/hub was needed to engage 4WD.
All that said, I understand what your confused about and am confused myself hense the questions.
The simplicity of it is (based on the fact that the front wheels did not engage drive while 4WD was in) I think is that the issue is between the clutch plate and the rear diff.
It seems that the rear diff. is not getting power so, where do I look?
I think it's the clutch plate and fly wheel or possibly the through out bearing... Unless theres something I overlooked.A Land Rover would never turn up to collect an Oscar. It'd be far too busy doing something important, somewhere, for someone."

No overdrive in it. I am having the rover sent to a local shop that has a guy who owned a series and seems good.
He also happens to be a transmission specialist and isnt charging to much for diagnostics.
To cold for me outside and no real workable area.
I will update when I know more.Tim M.
