Brake pipe kit.

I am posting this here as I expect it will get more traffic than the 101 section.

I have a 101 in the US and need to overhaul the clutch master cylinder. Unfortunately some SPO has completely rounded off the fitting that seals the output pipe to the master cyl. With a healthy amount of swearing I will remove this but need to make up a new pipe for the reinstall. I assume that these pipes are just the standard brake pipe fittings and flare that are used on series trucks. Is this pipe flare and its fittings something I could buy a kit for in the US at some generic parts shop or do I need to obtain something from the UK? The inevitable question would be where can I get something to make up a replacement?

Rovers North used to sell individual brake fittings which made do it yourself brake lines a snap.

Series rigs take standard double flares. I used to buy an inexpensive length of made up brake line from my local auto parts store, cut off one end, remove the US spec fittings, slip UK fitting to the end that still has the flange, bend the steel line into place, mark where I need the second flare then cut the pipe with a little extra length to make up the second flare. Then I slipped on the second fitting, formed a double flare and attached the line.

Cheap, easy to do, perfect length brake lines with nice straight lines, not mostly unbent coiled lines.

The bad news is that last time I called RN to order some new brake fittings I was told RN no longer offers them. But if you came up with a source for fittings, this is a good way to get those odd size brake lines cheaply. If you don't have one, Eastwood sells a good flare forming tool kit.

Hmmm. Been there last week, did that ... and was told by the RN sales rep that RN does not carry individual brake fittings. I even asked him to recheck.

It probably wouldn't hurt me to order a few just to have some on hand.

What's the number for the female connector that connects to the rubber brake line and the large diameter make connector for the dual master cylinder?

I've been trying a lot of forums over the last couple years, kind of like Goldylocks trying out things after breaking and entering into the Three bears residence.

Some lists just don't have active Series owners, some don't seem to have much of anyone active, some seem to get off on being nasty to one another, but so far this one feels comfortable and is US based. I've been mostly hanging out on the Series II club forum. Nice mob but very UK centric.

So unless the forum powers that be decide to kick out the web designer and keeper of the Series catalogue for British Pacific I expect to hang here and be sociable.

Brake line fittings

My somewhat local Advance Auto parts place stocks British thread brake pipes in various lengths, perhaps because one of the guys there is an MG guy. They are double flared on the ends, unlike some of the Rover ends which are only single, or bubble flared. They must be in Advance Auto's system.

Clutch pipe fitting

I need to bring this up again as the fittings I need are not the standard 3/16pipe 3/8-24 thread brake fittings.

The 101 clutch usese a fairly .625 bore girling master cylinder. The port threads are 3/8-24 fine thread. There is, however, an adapter that converts from the 3/8-24 to a 1/4 OD pipe and a 7/16 fine thread. I have tried the usual motor factors and the standard US thread brake pipe doesn't fit. Does anyone know where I can buy these larger brake pipe flare nuts?

I've just looked at my '71 IIA and realised that it uses the same fittings for the clutch pipes. Now to find out if our hosts sell the bigger fittings.

Brake pipe supplier found

For anyone looking for the unusual in brake or clutch pipe hardware Fedhill is very good. They are based in MA and are on line. They stock even the odd 7/16 size needed for your clutch master cylinder.

I bought our host's clutch pipe replacement kit which comes with a 3/8-24 threaded fitting which does not fit the 7/16 adapter fitted to the Girling .625 Master cylinder on a late IIa or SIII. I concede I did not phone first to enquire about fit so our hosts may still have the right part but the catalogue image shows the kit I bough mating to the adapter. They may want to look at this to avoid future customer confusion.
