I couldn't get a set of the fiberglass flares to fit correctly on our 109 three door. The later three door tub has a different rear wheel arch shape than a 4 door 109 or an earlier three door or pickup bed. I ended up using a 2.5 inch Pacer Performance Flexy Flare from Summit Racing, part number 52-189. The rubber Pacer flare is available in different widths and curves downward. I think it looks better than other rubber flares that tend to be more horizontal when installed. Our 109 has Range Rover axles converted to leaf springs that are wider than the Series axles. On hard deflection or load the rear tire can rub against the aluminum of the stock wheel arch, which is likely why the Defender had larger wheel arch openings.

It is the wife's 109 actually. 1968 SIIA, 3.9 Rover V8, R380 5 speed. early RR axles on leafs. My 109 is a 1980 SIII pickup, 1 ton chassis, 300TDI, otherwise stock.

IIRC I used a plated 1/2 or 3/4 inch long truss head screw. They have a large diameter head to secure the rubber but are very low profile.

IIRC I just used a pair of tin snips, usually used for cutting thin sheet metal.

We did use the wire to stiffen the edge of the arch. As I recall now, the wire migrated out the end of the opening after a short time so the wire was shortened about a half inch on each end and pushed into the opening. We then ran a short stainless steel screw into the opening, likely secured with a bit of silicone, to keep the wire from migrating. The screws are still in the end of the openings, so it has worked so far.
