My 1971 Series 3 88" has developed a problem with second gear. Feels like the synchro is gone but I'm no expert. Looking to hire someone to help troubleshoot and repair the problem. Thanks in advance. Tim Floyd in Stonington.

Likely a worn second-gear synchro, which is very common on Series 3 88s. If it grinds going into second and improves with double-clutching, that’s the classic symptom. Other possibilities include worn dog teeth or a selector fork, but synchro wear is the usual culprit. Checking gearbox oil is worth doing, but a proper fix typically requires pulling and rebuilding the gearbox.Comment
