Series III gearbox won't go into first

well who knows? it's working and as long as it doesn't get stuck in gear run with it. I once drove my S3 for 2? years with no reverse idler gear, well, it'd just barely move the rig as it was all rounded off.
i sure learned how to anticipate not getting stuck where i had to backup uphill, even on level ground it was touch and go! and i lived in Seattle at that time!!
