    Choke Install Advice Needed

I have recently bought a used choke to fit to my 61 Series 2 and replace the broken one.

It’s very close to fitting, but the threaded sleeve that passes through the bulkhead is slightly too long for the metal bracket on the engine side. I had thought about cutting it down but it appears to have been heat sealed up to the exact point I’d need to cut. I also thought about drilling the bracket hole open but there isn’t enough space to accommodate the new size hole needed.

Does anyone have any ideas that would allow me to either shorten the new black one in the photo or maybe pull it apart and use the metal cable sleeve and attach it to the old metal threaded sleeve? ALL ideas welcome as I have for the moment run out!

it looks like you bought a nice cable there but having put choke cables and other cables on lotsa cars a regular $12 cable from napa cut any length you want sufficies, i guess if you took the time you could cut the middle out of it? then shorten the end.

Thanks, I am beginning to wish I had. I am thinking I might cut the flexible part off the black plastic and then attach it back to the original somehow. Then I get the original part which has lasted since 1961 and a new flex cable and choke cable/ switch.

Bushwacker: Did you ever resolve this? I had a similar issue on my SIII with a column choke. All the aftermarket choke cables suck. I posted here in the forum my progress. I bought like 4 choke cables…all different part numbers…those cheap ones with the “Z” on the knob. They all sucked. Either too short or too long, and none fit the steering column. I ended up doing an Edlebrock billet one and cut the casing and used a coupler on the cable case. It’s a tight spring that handles a coupler with a side screw pinching it. It works okay.

if I had to do it over, I’d fabricate the whole thing from scratch. You can get some black PVC or ABS plastic hose of nearly the right dimension, then attach to a drill to make a lathe-like thing…use a file or sand paper to fine tune the fit(spin the drill and hold the file on it to mill it). ABS also melts pretty easy so you could fix it if you screw up. See kayak fixing kits. Steel bike cable or motorcycle throttle cable will work perfect and you can get it in custom lengths. You can even melt the lead plug that attaches the steel cable with a pipe soldering torch. Make a little project of it. It will probably come out better than a BritPart generic one. Good luck!
