Gunny here's your serial number decoded courtesy of CalVIN:
951 Model: Land Rover, Series III
Body type: Lightweight
Wheel base: 88in
Engine: petrol
Model years: 1972-1980

17557 Serial number
C Design: Two significant design modifications
The difference between a 5 and a 3 brg is the engine casing.
If the engine block has smooth sides its a 3brg and if it has reinforcing Xs' on the side of the casing its a 5 brg.
There is a website, Glencoyne Engineering, http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/, that has some engine numbers listed. You will be able to determine the general specs of your engine there. The site also has some information for a 200 DI conversion for a Series truck rather than the TDI, pretty interesting.
