RDROVAH
My 3rd Series III.
First one: '74, marine blue/limestone 88" hard top, Bought from a guy who ran the camera shop (who'd bought it from an RAF pilot that had brought it from his station in Iceland to the states) in North Conway in '91, for $1,500. Beautiful condition, except the engine. Tore the engine all the way down and back up.
Second one: Just about the time I got #1 put back together ('92), I heard about another Marine Blue, '74, 88" trop top - no joke, Behind a Barn. A guy I knew (had been my boss at my first job as a bagboy at Shaw's) had done some work on it for a guy, but never got paid, and the Rover got left. I got it for $50! Cosmetically it was rougher, and had no reverse, but after about 8 hours of work (mostly on clutch master/slave rebuild and disengaging a rusted clutch/flywheel) it ran great. I put off finishing #1, while I drove #2 to college 4 hours away (UMaine, Orono).
Alas, small Rover tragedies ensued: #1 was stored at buddy's radiator shop and he sold the shop. I was stuck at school (no time to get home, and a busted half-shaft), so eventually the first rover (with - seriously - thousands of dollars in three years of collected spares loaded into the back) was towed to a small JUNK(!) yard near Conway. I wonder if it's still there. Doubtful.
And #2 came with me as I followed a girl to North Dakota (damn redheads!) and 3 years later, when I moved to Illinois/Iowa, I had no way to bring it down with me, so it's probably still sitting where I left it in a tiny town south of Minot BEHIND A BARN!
Anyway, after having to let go of two Rovers, hopefully (pictured) is the happy ending to me finally ending up with some version of my dream car. A '73 nicely faded poppy red "hybrid" SIII with SIIa breakfast. Found this rare Midwestern specimen in Northwestern Wisconsin, up by Eau Claire. Land of cheese and beer. PO said this was the shop truck when he owned a British/foreign car shop in the area. They'd been in the process of doing a thorough (non-restoration-level) update, when he closed up shop. He sold the Rover to a friend of his, and it sat in his barn (with a ton of spares and two parts trucks) for 8 years before he sold it to me. He said the top was fabricated from the front half of a rover top and a ford (bronco?) liftgate. Said he hated the Rover bubble-top pickup cab. It looks like all the work was very well done. Oh, and it came with a Bellevue (pre-warn) Winch! (off the truck, on the list to be restored) A good bunch of wring is left to finish, and I've installed the ignition, the new gas tank it came with, the carb (now removed - see my other posts, maybe you can help!). and have added a few other parts that didn't come with. Hoping it's on the road by July. Still haven't sussed out the hydraulics, so we'll see.
Btw, to add to the drama, the sticker on the windshield is from the city of Davenport, IA, telling me to remove my "nuisance vehicle!" The city said a neighbor complained! One man's treasure .... Anyway, apparently shade-tree mechanic-ing is illegal in this town. Lame. Taken care of for now - no flat tires, and it's registered - they say they'll lay off unless someone else complains. We'll see.Comment

Be careful of those 'nuisance vehicle' complaints. I had my '65 parked in my side yard for a number of years so that I wouldn't take up parking on the street. Tires full, registered and everything. Someone around the corner complained and if I hadn't taken care of it, once it was towed I could NEVER get it back and it would have been crushed.
To be fair to the people that complained, the guy who used to own this house was a huge jerk and they thought they were getting back at him.1958 107 SW - Sold to a better home

get to know your nieghbors, engage their little rug rats in the wrenching. i live in a nice nieghborhood and had no issues when i stripped my 88 back to the seat box and painted the frame. whole process took over 5 months and included two days with a plastic paint tent over the front and all of this in the driveway.

Look at those 4" ambers! I have developed an unhealthy fixation for 4" amber lights.
