It looks like it warms the intake air until the the temps warm up. That little box with a spring will open/close a baffle that allows the intake air to draw over the hot exhaust when cold.

Oh, I dunno---That manifold probably had another good 10 or 15 minutes left in it before it really needed changing.

If you are talking about the Chingus on the side of the manifold I have no idea.

Been awhile since I have been able to get out and work on it but I got a little work done today. I pulled the radiator to fix a leak and pulled the driver side front fender to gain access to the steering box and brake and clutch master cylinders. I also need to install a new exhaust manifold for my new exhaust
I will post more pics as I go.

Forget about the originality factor, the old manifolds cracked and the heat damper freezes up anyway. You've already got many modern upgrades (alternator), so do the practical thing, and use the exhaust you recieved. Aftermarket manifolds are quite reasonable, and the exhaust hangs much nicer.

I converted because I couldn't find the earlier front pipe and the manifold wasn't too expensive. I also never liked that tight 90-degree bend from a flow perspective.

I would like to keep it original so I will try and have a custom one made. If that does not work I will convert it.
