    Just remember the energy from hitting something goes somewhere. Too stiff a bumper and you end up bending the frame.
    It can be substantially thicker and still bend before the frame.

    I think rover knew what they were doing.
    they might have, but production vehicles are the result of engineers AND accountants . . .the stock bumper, just like the retention of the ten spline axle, deletion of galvanizing on the chassis and door frames and many other features was a cost cutting measure. FWIW a HD bumper produced by Mayflower Winches (later fairey winches ltd) was an approved rover accessory.

      Get a full bumper replacement. That is what I did and there are so many benefits it is worth it. I know there are numerous ones available out there so plenty to choose from.

        Built mine to look like the original with a setback for the roller.
        No hand crank provision though.

          winch VS hand crank

          I do not know how you set the valves without the hand crank, it makes it so much easier. If at all possible figure a way to mount the winch and still use the hand crank. And you can start your rover with the handle if you have to, not a bad back-up.
