Officially 90 Weight, but this is great place to put One Shot swivel grease.

Must admit that the constant drip of an old box led me to fill it up with STP once.

Worked okay, and when disassembled - after sitting for some time and half full of water - was not a spot of rust in there!
      Don't worry, you're biodegradable.

Old willys jeeps with a similar cam and lever design use a mixture called "knuckle butter"......
It's really just a mix of gear oil and grease.... Google it..
I have used it for years and it works great...

I have also been told synth great oil is the way to go....

Well, I suppose you could use vegemite or marmite some folks say that's the only thing they are useful for . If not then "what he said".

By the way, should the box be full of fluid, 1/2 full? Can't find the specs.

                  Thanks

For many years, in addition to running a steel foundry here in CT, I represented a large British steel foundry in the US, located in Burton on Trent. I also spent a good deal of time in Sheffield doing developement work. I had a desk in Burton, although I was only there 10 days or so each quarter. Directly across the road was the main Bass Ale brewery. Sadly, to the south of the Bass plant was the largest Land Rover breakers yard I've come accross. Just up the road from Bass, to the north, was the plant that made Marmite, which used the waste from Bass. No one ever complained about the odor from the foundry because the Marmite odor in the air was worse.

On my IIa it's until the fluid is to the bottom of the filler hole which I interpret as pretty much full.

Just opened the filler of the steering box.The level was pretty much right there, at the top of the filler plug...
