when it's raining it's as wet inside as outside

you worry when there's no fresh oil spots on the driveway (it's not leaking = there's no oil in it)

you've become a proficient auto electrician since owning it

you actually understand how brakes work and what a servo is/does

you've finally worked out what your dad kept saying about double declutching actually means

    heating ?? what's heating ??

My daughter is 3 and my son is all of 7 months. We've had the Land Rover for 12 years. It outlasted an ex-girlfriend and my wife simply appreciates what it is and where it takes us.

The Rover is just as much a member of our family as our dog. Heck, I think we are more attached to it than our house.

The Rover has always been my daughter's favorite vehicle. When given a choice, she wants to ride in the truck. She often wants to hang out in the truck and pretend to drive. She is allowed to throw all the switches and play to her heart's content.

It is truly an extraordinary vehicle.

when asked why you have A Series Rover you look at the person like you want to say somthing but realize the explanation would be a waste of your oxygen.

When before every trip (even just down the street)in it you:
            -empty your bladder
-ensure tools, spare parts and fluids are in the truck
            -bring a change of clothes
            -bring coveralls & work gloves
-file a "flight plan" with your S.O.
-change into your most comfortable shoes
-bring some food and water (cigars are optional)
-relax, your're already where you want to be

Seeing as mine is still in parts and I have never driven it yet. Is it strange that I am looking forward to my first breakdown on the road once I get it running?

You Know You're Driving a Series Rover When...

What a terrific thread! Here's a few more:

-You buy gear oil by the pail, not the pint, and own your own pump handle/top assembly.

                    - You ALWAYS stop to find out who owns that Series Rover on the side of the road, or the parking lot, and you ALWAYS stop to converse with them.

-You're proud that your car still has a crank handle and you love to show off by crank starting the car.

-When you drive down the road and smell something burning or foul outside, you immediately search around your car.

                    - You're startled if you find yourself pulling off to the left to pass another vehicle.

                    - You travel to what is generally accepted to be one of the nation's wealthiest communities, filled with new Range Rovers, and people there want to stare at and ride in your Rover.

                    - You travel to one of New England's poorest communities and a guy with few teeth and a bloodied cammo outfit comes up to you to tell where "there's a few of those things in the woods."

-You give a 14 year old girl a ride home from a play rehearsal. Her mother sees you a few days later and says, "I think she's in love with you... actually, it's your car."

                    - EVERYONE knows where you are at any moment because your car is thoroughly recognizable.

If you've made the mistake and sold your Series Land Rover, here's a column I wrote for Rovers Magazine years ago to help you relive your Series days. It's on my website, along with my "SUV Character Quiz."

Most adventures can be described as a "white knuckle ride" my experience so far, of Series vehicles is a "no skin on my knuckles ride " !!

                        When.....

-Before "restoration".....you are broken down in front of the hardware store with your hood up and 2 people offer to buy it from you!!!!

-After "restoration".....you are broken down on an infrequently traveled dirt road with your hood up and 3 people offer to buy it from you.....then one comes back an hour later to check up on you and offers his warm truck cab to sit and chat about it while waiting for a tow!!!!

-You realize that the work lamp you installed for looks actually is an after-dark ground illumination system for tow truck drivers to accurately connect tow straps.....

-You realize that a prerequisite for ownership is a big set of guns, or a lifetime membership to the local gym, in order to repeatedly lift the hood with the weighty spare on top of it.

-You think about asking your wife to cash in her excess jewelry in order to afford a replacement directional amber lens on your Series III that you accidentally cracked.....

Character for sure....not seen so much with moderns.....

                          a few more;

                          the word "thing" comes up in a few ways;
while driving from NY to NC ina 109 exmod I must have heard 12 times "in that thing"

Today after driving to the ice box of NY (Long Lake) and it's -10F a co worker says how is the heat in that "thing"

I like some of Jeff's dead on, one that struck me I experienced this AM today as I passed a vehicle on the interstate even if it was pulled over along the side of the road.

the slower traffic keep right means you

I just thought of one.....signs I had only seen on our trip through Colorado and Utah back to California....

-When you are more concerned about the chance of there being a MINIMUM SPEED LIMIT sign on a highway than a MAXIMUM one

When in Canada you put on long johns, wool pants insulated coveralls, wool sweater and a heavy jacket, insulated boots and that is just to drive from Galloway to Calgary for a business meeting not to go play in the woods on your sled. (it was -35). the Rover was great there was just enought heat to keep the windows clear.

You know that in some snow storms it is actually better not to have the meager heating system going because then the snow would stick to the windshield but not melt . . .
