flickering oil light 95 LWB

Hi

My oil light has started flickering when i am at an idle for more than about 45 seconds. This seems to only happen after I've been driving for more than 20 minutes or so. It also only happens when I'm idling. As soon as I drive it goes off and stays off.

I have checked the oil and it is not low.

any ideas?

rebuild oil pump.

sounds scary - but not that hard or expensive.

Just did it for my Stage One (3.5L V8) that had similiar symptoms.

While the rebuild is not an unreasonable (or difficult)solution, also make sure you're using an appropriate grade oil. My 4.2 has 150k miles on the original pump and I use 15-40 oil. When I redid my heads, I replaced the pressure switch and I only noticed a flicker once since then when I inadvertently let it run a little over a quart low in 90 degree weather...

Your 1995 RRC oil pump is part of the front timing cover and I don't think it's servicable.

if it is not serviceable does that mean i just have to replace the whole thing if its dead? this is the 4.2

Before you drop serious money on a new front cover, confirm that the pressure is low at hot idle by removing the pressure switch, and putting an oil pressure gage in. These engines do not have GM small block type oil pressures to begin with and the switch diaphragm is known to stiffen with age, triggering it's contact while there's still oil pressure. The new switch is supposed to make contact at or about 4-5psi.

Mine started flickering at idle once in a while, too. It will also stay on slightly longer at start-up, more than it ever did in the past.

This ALL started upon changing the sending unit on the pan. Off roading snapped the wiring on the oem unit so I bought a new one and then the flickering, lagging light, etc. started. I just assumed it was a very sensitive unit compared to the last one.

Replaced it at about 160k or so and currently sit at 186k. It is also exacerbated by me using 20-50w, (synthetic) blend. I am not worried.

My oil pressure switch has been either steady on or flickering for over a year. At first I was worried, but several visits to my mechanic and follow-on oil pressure tests at oil changes have confirmed that I have good pressure so the culprit seems to be the logic unit. Some days its steady on, others is just flickers randomly - no pattern to it so I ignore it now. I have 230K mi.

My mechanic told me that the logic unit is a non-serviceable part so I've just left it as-is. I realize that I won't be able to depend on a dash light to know if I develop a problem, but I just live with the light on all the time. Between that light, the ABS light, and the turn signals my display looks like a Christmas tree or a rasta flag...
