What's this lever?

I'm going with R for repair for now. It'll be a bit before I have an answer. The truck as at Cityside Garage getting some work done.

It looks like the last tune up was done in the 60's. Allegedly, the truck was supposed to be used for some Nato purpose. That was canned and it sat in warehouse in France until sometime in the 1990's......

R means Reverse. This unit allows you to engage and reverse your gear ratios so that you can use 5 different speeds for backing up.

Of course with many of the redheads I know the lever is most likely used to both get her in AND get her out.

By the looks of those floor panels, you might as well pull those out and take the pic of what the lever is attached too instead of crawling underneath.

I'm guessing it's the lever of righteousness, sort of the Land Rover version of the sword of truth.

Don't mistake our teasing for meanspirited jibes. We're all totally jealous about your new lever and wish our rovers had one too. All kidding aside, that lever is for the Land Rover Retro Function or LRRF. It obviously isn't working ( probably the 1 amp fuse is blown). If it were functioning properly and in the forward position you would have a TD5 Defender.

Or, maybe it's to change from radio (R) to 8-track.

Actually, it looks like if you just would have lifted that thing up, then snapped the pic, you wouldn't have had to put up with everyone's ribbing.

After further thought, I think the O/D is still a possibility.

If it's like mine it comes with a cover:



Its on backwards in this photo (from PO), when turned around it is level and now has a cheap (but functional) plastic center console/cup holder mounted to it. Seat backs have also since been mounted to rails.
