I cut off my dumb irons today. It felt a little monumental, like a pivotal moment or something silly like that. I guess it is time to make some new ones now. Even though I cut new ones, I will recover and reuse the spring hangers from these old dumb irons. The heritage of them and all that....
The steel looks in good condition at the cut except for the bottom face. I am replacing that for the first 2 feet or so anyway.
I made some pieces to act as a jig in place. They locate (centered) on the rear hole for the chassis bushing with another hole for the front of the spring hanger.
The jig will give me the following locations.
1. Define the forwardmost point of the dumb iron
2. Establish the height of the top of the dumb iron.
3. Establish positively the location of the cross holes for the spring hanger as it mounts to the dumb iron.
4. The width of the outside faces of the spring hanger at the cross holes.
I will let it sit mocked up like this overnight while I plan the next move: I still have to mark it all up for the welded joint. I will do an angled joint, not a vertical one.

I did not get much done at all today. I got one dumb iron tacked up some of the way.
I bent up the bottom rail of the dumb irons. It works a treat.
It fits well.
The bottom is tacked on.
The gap at the back for final welding so I should be able to get a good full weld in there.
I did a bit on the gearbox crossmember too. First of course drill the spot welds and pop off the bottom.
New steel:
Upon closer inspection, I cut out a section where the gearbox mounts sit:
This was why. There was a backing piece and 60 years of grit and rust had expanded between the pieces. No point galvanizing or painting on top of that. So I cut the cancer out.
The patch:
I still have to finish welding that up too. Same old Same old.Comment

I got a little more done this evening.
Marking the amount to trim from the strip of steel.
Following the line.
I cut off the old spring hangers and started cleaning them up.
Both dumb irons tack welded. I will hang them from the cross holes for fit up..I will wait until after fit up to fully weld them up.
A little closer. It all takes time, that is for sure.Comment

Just got in from the garage after staring at my fully disassembled 95 disco for about the time it took me to drink a Newcastle....
Think I'll grab bother beer..."Out of every one hundred men, ten should not even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back"Comment
