This weekend I got most of the lights on my rover working. This is a huge upgrade from "a few" lights working. On top of that, I think I've figured out what the problem is for the other lights and will get em all lit up.

Nice not having to hurry home before dark

Removed most of the bent body from my SIII 88 that I rolled back in '06. The only body bit left on the chassis is the bulkhead. I think I can reuse the RF inner wing and the lift gate. The RF outer wing and the newly installed in '06 Defender bulkhead will need a bit of work. Everything else is going to the scrapper. Oh, and I need to remove the tub supports to refit to my 109.

Well, we are half way through Aug. so I switched to the canvas top. Now with the new diesel engine, the 88 is doing duty as my daily driver once again, so I figured the canvas would be much cooler then the pick-up cab.

Finally, finally, finally... I got my 2.25L back into the chassis... a small step , but it will help the rest go quicker. Talbot

                update from the weekend...

We did a family first - camping out of the Rover. My wife (and presumeably our adopted dog, Ippa) had never been camping before. Now that my knee is far enough along from surgery and the weather has started to turn, it seemed like a great time to head into the woods.

I spent the two weeks before making sure things in the Rover were in order - at least to my ability: oil change, fluids topped off, brakes adjusted (sorta)...

We ended up driving about 2.5 hours to Amherst Co Virginia, into the GW national forest. At least 1:30 of the trip was on the interstate doing 60mph (according to GPS). That always makes me nervous when I think about the thin skin of aluminum between me the world.... But the rig handled the high speeds well! On the way back I took the parallel highway, top sped was about the same, but felt a little safer.

All in all we had a great time! The Rover was a blast to camp out of. The biggest challenge is space. With the spare in the back, there wasn't much room for gear. We loaded up the sides and strapped stuff down above the tub line. Even then there was still barely enough room for the poor dog. Anyone found any creative solutions? Maybe a trailer hitch platform?

Here we are in the midst of unpacking:

Hmmm, in the last few days I have:
                  - reinstalled the intake and hi-temp painted exhaust manifolds w/new hardware
                  - installed a Pangolin alt. bracket (but ATM still running a Generator)
                  - cleaned/sanded/painted & reinstalled the sump
                  - installed a new and high-temp painted exhaust system
                  - refilled motor oil
                  - refilled cooling system with distilled water (1st flush)

Almost ready to push the button...

One of the guys i know placed a thick board on top of the seat box. It created a shelf unit. It was cut in half and had a hinge that would rise up in the middle for easier access to the back. He also placed tie downs on top of the board for strapping things down.

That looks like gourmet camping! I don't eat that good at home. Looks like fun though! What kind of little grill/cooker was that you cooked the fish on? Appeared cast iron and looked quite nice and handy. Thanks

                        9/14/10

today i repaired and re-painted both the right and left rear seat frames. there was some rust growing at the base.

i also replaced all the related hardware with aluminum bolts/washers/nuts instead of steel. plus i inserted rubber grommets between the hinges and adjusted the seat back rear clips to reduce the rattles and squeaks.

                        sometimes it's the little things...

nick, are you not able to put your spare on the bonnet?

today i was looking at the right side of the tub with the seat removed, looking at ways to attach a custom built storage box. something that could be bolted in using the existing holes for the seat and the holes along the top inside of the tub. didn't have time to draw up any plans though...

It is a Lodge cast iron hibachi http://amzn.to/dzxgzP and it works wonderfully - gets amazingly hot!

Regarding the bonnet mount - Its an option, but with my curved bonnet I understand that it is going to stick up way high. I looked at bonnets with mounts and they appear to run just under a grand...would be nice, but not a priority right now.

I've also been looking for custom wheel well cargo boxes - even started a thread on it - I'm going to try and go that route soon. It would be nice to carry tools and not worry about them getting stolen.

On Sunday I swapped out my Super Swamper TSLs for my street tires. Then this morning I drove it to work.

OMG IT RIDES AMAZINGLY. Radial tires rock my world...by NOT rocking my world

Now that's tempting - solves some of the storage problem, love the look of the bonnet mounted tire too

Might have to give that some thought - although it appears to need some frame work (topic for another thread)
