Helped a friend try to track down a knock in his 2.5Tdi. It's not the rod bearings...

Fabbed up a needed 3/16x32 nut. You know those impossible to find locally, thicker than normal items. Just took a hex coupling nut, added a hacksaw and slowly folded in a file. Waaala! Just the right size and consistency. Now, I'll have to work on duplicating the patina.

Using Awl Grip 545 epoxy primer, about 200 clams for the two gallon kit. Top coating with flat black Perfection 2 part polyurethane.

Repaired a vacuum leak on the LeWB. Running great now.

Drove it home this past weekend!!!!

Maine to NJ.. 2 days, many miles, 1 quart of oil, a few OZ brake fluid, and a liter or so of water for the expansion tank... And my GF "Cant wait for the next adventure" You should have seen how excited she was that the oil pressure light wouldnt go out and that we were taking out the pressure gauge sender and pressure switch in a diner parking lot... I guess I didnt explain how important a thing oil pressure was. We got it sorted and away we went.

a great great first "outing" for my new (old) rover!

Today I vacuumed out acorns, grass clippings, and misc small rusted bolts from behind the seats, and PB blasted the floor mounting bolts in prep for bleeding the clutch in a few days.

Worked on the bugeye, well this really two weekends ago and today. I reconditioned both axle cases, installed a tru trac in rear w/ bearing kit, fooled with the pinion shims to get that right, on off on off on...... installed new springs, set axles on springs and attached front spring plates kind of. Put the wrong plates on the front, realized it after the fact, so today I removed them and installed the correct ones. Love doing things twice. glad I didn't get to the back ones yet or I'd be changing both.

This is on my list of summer projects. Can you tell me a bit more about the pinion shims? Did you have to buy a variety of sizes, or is there a stack already hanging out in the diff?

I bought my TT from GBR as a kit with bearings and shims. I did it by trial and error, started w/ original set, installed them, tighten pinion nut and had some end play, Reduced the stack height and repeated the process until I had a little preload on the bearings.
If you get it from GBR Bill is very helpful on explaining the process.
There is a stack in the differential but mine had to much end play when reinstalled. Didn't make sense to me that they would not have been correct. Bearing are made to very exact dimensions.

I'll have to double check my box. I ordered mine from Bill, too, but don't recall seeing any shims. I did get the bearings and the thick adapter ring tho.
